The selfish reason for not visiting her was I did not want to share in her unhappiness. I did not want the emotional burden of going to her home and sharing in her life. I did not have time to experience deplorable. I take plenty of my ain sadness, I thought.

So I missed that one chance to raise myself up--on to higher ground. This is, I am distressing to say, all likewise common, not only in my life, but in general.
